1929.
The legion is not just a place to visit and have a drink we are a
business vital to the community. The role of our Legion is to
support veterans, and RCMP members and their families when
called upon for assistance.
ln addition we are here to support organizations in our community
such as the local Hospital , Hospice, minor Sport Teams , Fire Fighters,
CML Snider School programs and Seniors.
Our building and resources are available for use for Celebrations of Life, Seniors Cards, community darts, entertainment events and meetings. We have kitchen
facilities and can provide meals for all occasions.
In order to remain a strong and vibrant supporting organization in this community we rely, not solely on membership dues, but by the community's involvement and attendance of our events. We thank all those that do attend and look forward to the upcoming events over the next months.
Many of you have asked for a copy of this beautiful Remembrance Day song created by a local artist Mike Johnson. Mike lost five great uncles (five brothers) in WWII. This was played at Branch 160's most recent Veterans Dinner and Wellington's Remembrance Day ceremony - so here it is with Mike's generous approval to share - enjoy!!

Just one of the many reasons why buying a poppy is so important. In Royal Canadian Legion Branch 160's continuing attention to veterans and community needs Poppy Fund Committee, Peter Campbell and 3rd Vice Mitch Smith presented to Briar Boyce, Senior Development Officer for the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Foundation (PECMHF) with a gift of $2,000 on September 4. The funds were raised through the 2023 Poppy Fund campaign.
PECMHF is proud to announce that, with this gift, Branch 160’s cumulative giving total to the hospital over the past 23 years has surpassed $22,000.
The need for priority medical equipment never stops, so Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital (PECMH) is grateful for the continued support from the Royal Canadian Legion in Wellington.
Having modern medical equipment available at the right time improves patient care. This includes caring for the veterans living in our community. Having new patient lifts on the inpatient unit improves patient outcomes, reducing the risk of injury during moves and lessening the physical demands of lifting on caregivers.
The donation from Branch 160 supported the purchase of a new patient lift that assists caregivers who care for patients with mobility issues during their stay at the hospital. The patient lift is designed to raise or lower patients from their beds to and from either a wheelchair or a stationary chair.
“The foundation’s mission is to advance health care for the people of Prince Edward County and the hospital’s patients, and it is only through the support of our community that we can help ensure everyone, including veterans, receives the care they need,” said Peggy Payne, chairperson with the PECMH Foundation. “Funding support from organizations like the Royal Canadian Legion has a tremendous impact on our ability to provide the standard and quality of care residents and visitors of Prince Edward County deserve, and we are extremely thankful for that.”
“We are especially grateful to the Poppy Fund Committee for this gift towards a patient lift. Donor support is crucial because the government does not pay for medical devices,” said Shannon Coull, executive director of the PECMH Foundation. “Mechanical lifts make moving and lifting patients much easier and can help reduce the ergonomic risks associated with manual patient handling. Having this new equipment available for our staff will be crucial in helping patients heal and recover.”
Each November, we respectfully wear our poppies in tribute to those who have fought and died for our country, but many of us may not fully realize the direct impact these four-petaled flowers have on our community. While the primary purpose of the Poppy Fund is to assist former servicemen and women in need, a large portion of the funds raised in Prince Edward County help support charitable organizations in our community that provide service and care to veterans. This year’s poppy campaign begins on October 25 and runs until November 11.
“We’re glad we can help improve the well-being of patients and caregivers in such a direct way,” said Peter Campbell, Branch 160’s Poppy Fund chairperson. “We know this equipment will help make a positive difference for many people who rely on the quality care provided by all the hospital’s staff. We are thankful to everyone who supports the poppy campaign and the Legion. Because of you, the Legion can help others living in this community, including patients at the hospital, have access to the best tools to care for patients.”

Sunday November 3rd was the 2024 Veterans Dinner held each year one week prior to Remembrance Day, in honour of the fallen, retired and serving veterans in our area.
It was a wonderful evening with a full house. Joanna Greene of the WCA Remembrance Day Memorial Banners Committee was on hand to explain what the banners were and how they will enhance Main Street Wellington during the upcoming days before Remembrance Day. Branch 160 has sponsored two banners in honour of Dr. Russell Thompson and two brothers Ira & Wilson (Kia) Burd.
Evenings like this take a lot of planning and organization, not to mention time that volunteers commit from their busy schedules A very big thank you to Don & Mo for providing a delicious roast beef dinner with all the fixings - it was outstanding. As well a thank you to Buck Buchanan - Veteran Service Officer for co-ordinating this event. Special thanks to Dave & Brenda Silver , as well as the team of volunteers that participated in the set up, serving and cleanup after the event - Jan Skelton, Linda Maguire, Denise Richardson, Sue Riddell, Joanne Killick-Hill, Angela Snider, Mitch & Joanne Smith

PASSAGE OF TIME
Silent now are guns of old
History written; stories told
By young men, their years now aged to gold.
Young children now are being taught
Of battles for their freedom fought
And the terror that the conflicts wrought.
Fields littered, all soldiers dead
A bloody ground is coloured red,
A passion for peace, now being fed.
Memories of those lost, we share
So bow your head, and a Poppy wear,
A simple act, to show you care.
Canadian flag
Dedicated to all who served, and their families.
